Translation:

Whoever fears this staff

This theme was introduced by the great Zen master Hakuin (1685-1768), who used the same accompanying inscription. The painting serves as a reminder for us to always behave virtuously.

This is a fine example of one of Tesshu’s signature themes: the brushwork is lively and dynamic, and the staff appears three-dimensional.
